An ever-increasing number of young children come home to an environment of hunger and distress. For these children, Yad B’Yad established its Bayit Cham (Warm Homes) project. Yad B’Yad (literally “hand in hand”) is a non-profit organization which seeks to extend a helping hand to children in need. “Warm Homes” is an after-school program for at-risk children ages 3-7, which helps to overcome a critical lack of services for this segment of the population.
From Yavneh in the south to Netanya in the north, Yad B’Yad offers an island of security in a dangerous reality. Every year, hundreds of children between the ages of three and a half to eight, who have been carefully screened by the welfare services, come to our Bayit Cham (Warm Homes) project, where they are given the love and care that their distressed parents are unable to provide.
Many of these children come from immigrant or single parent families and low socio-economic backgrounds. As the parents struggle to make ends meet, thousands of young children in Israel go without supervised or supportive places to come home to after they finish daycare or kindergarten. The challenge is compounded for children whose parents are in jail or involved in drugs or prostitution.
The need in south Tel Aviv-Yafo neighborhoods is particularly acute because many of the children are undocumented residents (asylum-seekers or foreign workers) or from Arab communities, which face a unique set of challenges.
The four Warm Homes in southern neighborhoods in Tel Aviv-Yafo require special funding due to the politically-sensitive populations they serve. The annual operating expenses of one Warm Home are $120,000. This includes educational materials, enrichment programming, food, salaries, building maintenance, furniture, and insurance. In some case, parents make a financial contribution but most Warm Homes rely on the generosity of donors. The only Warm Home which receives other funding is the one in Jaffa Dalet, which receives $10,000 from the Israeli Ministry of Welfare.
