INCREASING ACADEMIC READINESS AND CHILD SAFETY THROUGH EXTENDED HOURS AT SCHOOL
Current Situation
In Israel, all schools are given a socio-economic rank (from 1–9). In south Tel Aviv and Yafo, the elementary schools have low socio-economic ranks, reflecting large immigrant populations and low levels of educational attainment by parents. Often, the parents work low-skilled jobs requiring long hours; consequently they are present for their children until later in the evening and children usually go home alone, unsupervised
Project Description
The Long School Day program was recently established to extend school hours for children in grades 1-3 at elementary schools in south Tel Aviv and Yafo. The program provides additional learning and enrichment: the school day now finishes at 4.30pm instead of the standard 1.00pm or 2.00pm. Schools will offer various enrichment programs based on the needs of the school and the interests of the students. These can include music, robotics, art, sports, dance, yoga and meditation. Children also receive a hot lunch.
Project Objective
The program aims to support and enrich children educationally and socially from low socio-economic areas and to provide them with a safe environment while their parents are at work. The program strengthens the foundations for future academic success and improves access to opportunity.
How You Can Help
To support one school’s participation in the Long School Day program, the requested donation is $161,300. There are 23 schools participating in the program.
