Transportation Van for the Disabled

The Umbrella Association of Organizations (UAO) of people with disabilities was established by the late Aliza Begin in 1980 and comprises 30 organizations including Ilan, Akim, the Blind and Deaf Associations and others, giving service to thousand of disabled people. The population of the disabled in Israel is unfortunately very high and reaches about 600,000 people, about 10% of the population.

The organization operates a national information center in Tel Aviv, essentially supported by the Tel Aviv Jaffa municipality.

A special transportation van for disabled people, mostly individuals in wheel chairs, will take them to medical institutions, study, work and other activities. All clients are incapable of using public transportation or taxis.

UAO is currently operating an old van, donated many years ago.  The van is often being repaired, and therefore out of service on many occasions although booked for transporting the needy and disabled to various places.  The outcome of this situation is: the client has to buy very expensive private services, which they can not afford.

The profile of the typical van rider includes a lack of self mobility (wheel chairs users, blind due to illness, amputees), suffering from Post Polio conditions. All riders are part of the lower socio-economic group. Their only income is the social security handicapped allowance, which varies from NIS 1,700 to NIS 2,700 per month.
