In southeastern Tel Aviv, the neighborhoods of Hatikva,
Ezra, and Ha'argazim are very low income areas. In Israel's 2001 Census,
the Hatikva neighborhood was ranked third from the bottom in terms of
socioeconomic status; Ha'argazim was ranked the very lowest in this
category.
Additionally, 25% of these neighborhood residents have
exceeded retirement age. Many of these elderly people live on their own
and lack a family support system. These neighborhoods are also
characterized by having a high number of elderly new immigrants, who
face many additional challenges trying to live in a new country. |

The elderly feeing program allows many of these
community members to have a few hot meals per week.
Despite the numerous resources invested by the
Municipality of Tel Aviv, much of the elderly population is still going
without sufficient food and nutrients on a daily basis. Because most of
the elderly residents did not accumulate significant pensions and much
of their monthly social security payments go towards medication, utility
bills and more.
As a result, many elderly people restrict their
consumption of necessities, often purchasing inexpensive, low quality
food. At the Beit Danny Community Center, hot meals are served to
elderly, lonely, and disabled community members. As most of them lack a
family support system, the program will enable them not only to live
with dignity, but also to eat a healthy and nutrition meal together. |
